Boob Toob Supplemental: Toob Raider edition

We got a new cat and named her Indy. Because she likes to explore. We did it as a joke after talking to fellow Boob Toober/Blooger/cat owner Rebecca but the cat seemed to respond to it so we just went with it. But enough of my life story, here's some videos and junk!

Raiding the Lost Ark

Really cool 'filmumentary' by Jamie Benning. This actually came out 2 years ago but just got around to seeing it recently. It's Raiders of the Lost Ark but spliced with supplementary material (in the form of audio, video, transcripts, pictures and even comics) related to the making of the movie. Really fun to watch especially if you like Raiders and/or Indiana Jones in general.

Staging Raiders

In case the above video wasn't enough for ya, here's Raiders in black and white and with a different score to help emphasise Steven Spielberg's staging techniques. The guy behind all this is director Steven Soderbergh and I guess he thinks very highly about Raiders from a visual staging standpoint.

No embeds but please go to this link for his write up as well as the video. Careful with that thang, Indy!

Korra Book 4 trailer

I can't believe this series is almost over. Just 4 books/52 episodes in total. I thought book (or season) 4 wasn't until next year but it'll be out this month. Maybe Nickelodeon wants it out of the way. Such a good series, one of my all-time fave animated shows. I'm gonna be sad when it's over and I hope they do another show set in the same universe.

Moonlight | Sony A7s ISO test

I'm into photography and I watch a lot of these kinds of tests but I normally don't post them here. This is pretty nice though. Shot using a Sony A7s and lit entirely by moonlight. Good job by Sony creating a sensor that performs really well at the higher ISOs and if I was more of a video guy, I wouldn't hesitate picking one up. (I have the A7 and it does really well with photos.)

Japanese GotG trailer

Yeah, I'm not done with the Guardians of the Galaxy love. Check out the Japan trailer. A lot more entertaining than the one we got.

I had a couple more GotG related stuff to post (one was the team's appearance in the Avengers Pokemon-like anime and the other was Chris Pratt's GotG/Marvel parody by SNL) but they seem to have been taken down from Youtube. Oh well. Watashi wa Groot!

Optical illusion

For those of you who like headaches...

I'll see you guys later! (Assuming you're still alive after watching that video.)

Boob Toob Supplemental: ALL THE VIDEOS!

By Dan Pua

Got so many videos, better post this now before I get any more! Prepare yourself for another installment of Dan posts silly videos cos he's bored Boob Toob Supplemental!

You can thank that sicko Bobgar for the gif above.

Understanding Art House: Snowpiercer

Major spoilers if you haven't seen Snowpiercer so please watch that movie first before watching this video. There's a lot to take in during and after the movie and this analysis helps frame things although someone out there has probably done an even more in depth analysis. Watch out for a Snowpiercer review in an upcoming episode of the Boob Toob.

Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist

This is a fan made web series based on a hugely popular video game by Capcom. It apparently got approval from Capcom. At first I wasn't digging it and didn't feel as though the actors were fit to play Ryu and Ken but it ended up being pretty interesting. Although I admit it may not be all that interesting to non-fans. There's a surprise cameo from another Capcom property that I greatly enjoyed.

The link below is episode 00 or 'Alpha' which acts as a prelude but is actually set some time in the future (sorry for the confusion!) when Ryu and Ken are fighting. Episode 1 shows us how it all started and takes it from there. It's a Ryu and Ken story ut also goes into the history of their master, Goken.

There's 12 mini episodes, each being 12 mins or so in length. We found a version where it's just one big movie so that might've helped with our enjoyment. But who knows, maybe others would rather watch it in bite sized chunks.

Check it out if you liked the game from back in the day but maybe not if you didn't care for the game. They're apparently doing a season 2.

Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno trailer

Rebecca is losing her mind right about now.

Walt & Jesse's new gig

[Updated] The Bet To End All Bets! (probably not though)

By Dan Pua

Some months ago, I don't even remember when, Bobgar and I made a bet over which movie was going to make more money: the movie with the talking apes or the movie with the talking raccoon and tree? Or rather...

Bobgar went with Apes and the Marvel Zombie that I am, I went with GotG. Be sure to listen to our upcoming Boob Toob episode where we discuss these movies with our good friend and fellow Earth 2 Network bro Lawrence Rosales. Thanks by the way to Box Office Mojo since I'll be referring to them for all the figures.

As of Friday, 8 August 2014, 11am Australian Eastern Standard time (some time Thursday evening/night for US peeps) GotG has made $126,759,442 and there's still one day to go in its first week. Apes made $102,952,844 in its first week. GotG also made more monies during the first weekend by ooga chaka-ing itself to $94.3m vs the $72.6m that Apes in its opening weekend. So talking raccoon and tree wins the first weekend and the first week.

But there was another component to the bet. Bobgar predicted that GotG will open big and have a huge drop in its second week. Fair enough, GotG is a bit of an unknown quantity and who wants to watch a superhero sci-fi movie, right? Even I couldn't be sure that this wasn't going to happen.

Apes made $52.7m in its second week, a 48.8% drop from the first week. Not bad. Assuming GotG passes the $130m mark, it will have to drop by about 60% in its second week to match the $52.7m second week haul of Apes. Or 80% (i.e. make about $25m) if it is to match the week 1 and 2 total of Apes ($155.7m).

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Production budget - $170,000,000
Opening weekend - $72,611,427
Week 1 - $102,952,844
Week 2 - $52,735,785

Guardians of the Galaxy
Production budget - $170,000,000
Opening weekend - $94,320,883
Week 1 - Over $126,759,442 (one day left in the week)
Week 2 - ?

If I remember, I'll update this write up next week with 2nd week figures. In the meantime, check out Bobgar's Koba!

UPDATE: August 18, 2014

GotG has beaten Apes' total domestic haul. GotG has $222.3m while Apes is at $201.8m. GotG earned $63.2m in its second week, a 53% drop but still higher than Apes' $52.7m. So if we're only talking US numbers, looks like I won the bet.

Here's the thing though: Apes is doing really well in foreign markets, having earned $334.8m so far. At the moment, GotG is at $196.4m. So if we're taking those figures into account, Bobgar may have me beat (for now).

While I'm here, check out these failed Apes sequel names. Also Groot and his new shirt!

Fun stuff! Gotta do this again next year. Perhaps we'll bet on...

Boob Toob Supplemental: Ooga chaka edition

Check out that sweet Attack on Titan and Adventure Time mashup by Rodrigo Alexandrino ICO! High res version available here and you can go here to see his process and some close ups. So good!

Less than 6 hours until I see the Guardians of the Galaxy movie so let's knock out another Boob Toob Supplemental!

3D Futurama

Keeping things within the cartoon realm, check out this 3D version of the Futurama opening scene. Looks beautiful, doesn't it?

More info and video/pics here. Thanks to fellow Boober and Toober Wendi Freeman for bringing this to our attention.

No Man's Sky featurette

Short little video on the story of Hello Games, the studio behind upcoming PS4 game No Man's Sky. This game looks and sounds so damn good, I may have to buy a PS4 just for it.

Lupin the Third live action movie trailer

YES! The world's greatest thief, Arsène Lupin III, finally gets a live action adaptation!*

The movie comes out in Japan on August 30 and it's directed by Ryuhei Kitamura who also directed films such as VersusGodzilla: Final Wars and apparently Midnight Meat Train which I've never seen but sounds interesting enough based on the title. He also directed the in game cutscenes for the video game Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes which is a Game Cube remake of the original Playstation game Metal Gear Solid. He's a cool dude.

The movie looks beautiful and I love how the characters look and seem to act a lot like the manga/anime versions of themselves. Fujiko is crazy hot, as she should since her character is a bit of a seductress. Can't wait to see it!

* Ooops, I apologise. Below is the first Lupin the Third live action adaptation.

Talk of the Town

ABC's Australian Story recently did a feature on Aussie singer Megan Washington. She talked about her fear of public speaking and her debilitating stutter. It was really engaging and well done and made me care for this person who I never heard of before (I'm not hip and up to date with what the cool kids listen to). Some info here and the transcript here. No YouTube embed or a link to the video (couldn't find one online) but I thought I'd share anyway.

Birdman trailer

I never understood the term 'batshit insane' until I saw this trailer. No idea what it's about and I don't think I wanna know, I just wanna go in there without knowing any info. Also, aw yeah Keaton being Keaton! And a bunch of other famous peeps are in it too. Bobgar likes Edward Norton and he's in here. Gotta see this movie NOW!

In case you didn't click and watch the trailer, here's some Keaton for ya!

Thanks to Devin Bruce (Doctor Teeth on Twitter and other places) for bringing this to my attention.

BATMETAL!

I accidentally sent this video to my mother. I fail at internetz. Fun video though. Good thing it had subtitles since I wouldn't have been able to understand squat.

Thanks to John at Burnt Weiners for tweeting this.

Artists vs TMNT

That's great and all but where's Vanilla Ice?

TMNT Saturday Morning Slow Jams

Nope, we're not done with the TMNT love just yet. Check it out, son!

Zombeavers trailer

Whuuuuut?

Thanks, ya Comic Bastards! (No, that's not an insult. That's their name! Get off my case!)

Not long now before...

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: Crystal

Episode 1

By Rebecca

The day has finally come. The first episode of Toei Animation’s re-boot of the Sailor Moon anime has been released. It’s available right now on Crunchyroll, though us cheapos (non-subscribers) will have to wait a week to see it there. Alternatively, we can all watch on NicoNico! It will be available there for the next two weeks. Now you know at least two places you can find it, go forth and watch. Or you can read a few of my thoughts first. Spoilers? Maybe  (is it even possible to spoil Sailor Moon?)

This seems crazy but there might be some out there for whom the re-boot is their first experience of Sailor Moon. Who is she? What’s it all about? She’s Usagi Tsukino, a 14 year-old school student by day and Sailor Moon, a magical girl by night. Her first mission is pretty straight forward:

Like the manga, and the original anime, the first episode revolves around Usagi meeting her guide, the talking cat, Luna. Luna shows Usagi how to use her powers and transform into the magical girl, Sailor Moon (a name which she seems to come up with on the spot). We get a glimpse of the enemy, whose diabolical plan it is to create a zombie force via the power of discount jewellery. We meet the mysterious Tuxedo Mask, who doesn’t really seem all that mysterious.

"Hmm does he look kinda like the guy I met earlier today?"
And we get our first look at someone who could be an ally. (Alright, it’s Sailor Mercury – surprise).
I’m  pretty pleased with this re-boot. It’s following the manga really closely, and my understanding is that it’ll continue to do so throughout the series. If you’ve only watched the original, American released anime, you’re in for some changes. I like the new animation. It’s prettier, brighter, and I don’t mind that the characters are more angular and thinner (who knew Sailor Moon could be drawn any thinner?). For comparison, here’s the original manga cover art with the original anime, and the re-released manga art with the re-boot anime.

The new opening song is pretty damn catchy too. And the lyrics are very Sailor Moon:

Ah, girls won’t surrender their pride either
They won’t give up their Destiny to a Prince
They have the will to fight for themselves
...
We’re not just frail weaklings who just need to be protected
...
A New Legend will begin, right here, right now
Pretty Guardian SAILOR MOON

If you’re a fan of the manga or the old anime, check out Sailor Moon: Crystal. If you’ve never seen the show before but are intrigued by the above, give it a chance!

(Oh man. I just realised all the new merchandise that’ll be out now... cha-ching! I’ve got some online shopping to do.)

Boob Toob Supplemental: Hooked on a feeling edition!

Fron deviantART member BloodySamoan

Star Wars trailer... Guardians of the Galaxy Style!

Here's a fan edited trailer for the original Star Wars using the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer music. Pretty neat, don't'cha think? I'm soooooo excited for both movies. I hope GotG is great and I hope Luke kicks some ass. Screw that Han Solo and his stupid broken leg!

The Legend of Korra: Book 3 trailer

The best animated series in recent memory is about to return for a 3rd season. CAN. NOT. WAIT!

Incredibox v3

Something different! This one isn't a video (but it can be ‘viewed’ on a computer so it still counts as a Boob Toob), more of an interactive audio experience (and some video if you can unlock the bonus content). Pretty funky, try it out! There’s a v1 and v2 as well with different tunes.

Big Hero 6 trailer

Fun trailer on an upcoming animated movie by Disney which is based on an old Marvel book. Not super old but this was when they were doing the Marvel Manga stuff. The concept may be different, I remember the book featuring 6 heroes. Or at least it seemed that way based on the covers. Maybe this is the Disneyfied version. I love that white blob dude.

Real life version of Kirito's Elucidator from Sword Art Online

Nice work by the guys at Man At Arms for not only creating an awesome real life replica of Kirito's blade from the anime Sword Art Online, but also for this cool ass 'making of' video. Check out their other videos white you're at it, I think I saw Link's sword in there.

Hentai Kamen

Sent in by Billy (a.k.a. Aqualec) although I'm not sure why, it's not like I'm into this weird crap. Nope, not at all...

Ikaruga review

Here's an old one for ya. Greg Kasavin at Gamespot gives a good video review for what is possibly the best shooter ever. Ikaruga was originally released on the Sega Dreamcast and eventually on the Nintendo Gamecube (I owned that one). I just saw it for sale on Steam which prompted me to look up some videos for it. I might have to get it again!

I’ll let the video below explain the game mechanics but for me, the main draw was that it didn't require you to simply avoid enemy fire. If you turn your ship white, you can absorb the white enemy fire and use it to power you up. Same deal with black enemy fire, just turn yourself black. So it’s a totally different play style than, say, Gradius (which I also adore). There’s a ton of depth to this game, most of which you’ll probably only realise once you’ve played it a few times.

The easy mode is challenging but doable. This game can be absolutely brutal though when going up the difficulty levels. You might get to a point where you can finish the levels in the higher difficulties but what’s your score like? Can you chain combos together (hitting 3 enemies of the same colour) or do you just barely make it out alive?

And even if you’re that damn good, are you good enough to handle two ships at once like this bad ass below? He’s getting a crazy amount of combos too. What a legend!

If you like shooters, I can't recommend Ikaruga highly enough.
