Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: Crystal

The day has finally come. The first episode of Toei Animation’s re-boot of the Sailor Moon anime has been released. It’s available right now on Crunchyroll, though us cheapos (non-subscribers) will have to wait a week to see it there. Alternatively, we can all watch on NicoNico! It will be available there for the next two weeks. Now you know at least two places you can find it, go forth and watch. Or you can read a few of my thoughts first. Spoilers? Maybe  (is it even possible to spoil Sailor Moon?)

This seems crazy but there might be some out there for whom the re-boot is their first experience of Sailor Moon. Who is she? What’s it all about? She’s Usagi Tsukino, a 14 year-old school student by day and Sailor Moon, a magical girl by night. Her first mission is pretty straight forward:

Like the manga, and the original anime, the first episode revolves around Usagi meeting her guide, the talking cat, Luna. Luna shows Usagi how to use her powers and transform into the magical girl, Sailor Moon (a name which she seems to come up with on the spot). We get a glimpse of the enemy, whose diabolical plan it is to create a zombie force via the power of discount jewellery. We meet the mysterious Tuxedo Mask, who doesn’t really seem all that mysterious.

"Hmm does he look kinda like the guy I met earlier today?"

And we get our first look at someone who could be an ally. (Alright, it’s Sailor Mercury – surprise).

I’m  pretty pleased with this re-boot. It’s following the manga really closely, and my understanding is that it’ll continue to do so throughout the series. If you’ve only watched the original, American released anime, you’re in for some changes. I like the new animation. It’s prettier, brighter, and I don’t mind that the characters are more angular and thinner (who knew Sailor Moon could be drawn any thinner?). For comparison, here’s the original manga cover art with the original anime, and the re-released manga art with the re-boot anime.

The new opening song is pretty damn catchy too. And the lyrics are very Sailor Moon:

Ah, girls won’t surrender their pride either

They won’t give up their Destiny to a Prince

They have the will to fight for themselves

...

We’re not just frail weaklings who just need to be protected

...

A New Legend will begin, right here, right now

What have I been watching? Tons of anime, that's what!

Someone on the 11 O'Clock Comics forum recently asked what anime to look out for and I ended up giving a longer response than I intended. Probably because we've been watching a ton of anime at our place lately. We went from watching one anime series week to week (and a few that we pile up) to at least five per week. Not to mention the odd anime movie plus the backlog on various anime series.

So. Much. Anime!

Below is my reply to the guy plus a couple of additions. I'll probably talk about a bunch of these on future BoobToob eps, maybe I can convince Bobgar to do an all anime ep!

Attack on Titan (check out the main pic above) is crazy good! Titans (giant human looking creatures) show up out of nowhere and kill off most of the human population. The remaining survivors build a giant walled city and they all live there since the titans can't get to them. 100 years pass and things seem okay. And then the fun starts.

Get on it now cos it's the new hotness! There's a couple of mysteries like where did the titans come from, how did the walls even get built in the first place, etc. They don't give it to you all right away like with some anime where the opening narration tells you everything. I found myself asking lots of questions early on but the show gives me enough meat to chew on each episode. They reveal bits and pieces about the characters and the back story of the world as time goes on.

It's available streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu. I love all the grappling hook action, they're zipping around the place like Spidey.

The Devil is a Part Timer: The big bad villain from some fantasy world escapes through a portal and he gets stuck on Earth with no powers and he ends up working at McDonalds. (Well on the show it's MgRonalds, but we know it's McDonalds.) Freaking hilarious. The day to day adventures of the big bad devil guy and his lieutenant are the best. It's available on Hulu and Funimation.

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (not sure what those words mean) is another anime that we're watching week by week. It's off to a really good start. The white haired dude below and his robot come from space and crash land on future Earth which is mostly covered in water and people live on giant floating vessels. There's more to it than that but you can find out for yourself if you watch it. We learn about this world along with the white haired guy and I'm curious to see more of the world and how he adjusts to it. The show isn't so much good vs bad but more world building and I hope it stays on that course.

Flowers of Evil is some creepy stuff. The animation style is different (the characters are rotoscoped) but it grew on me. My wife likes it a lot and I initially wasn't into it (anime set in high school featuring high school characters are a big turn off) but I'm watching this week by week too. 13 eps total so it's not a massive commitment. The topic isn't something that I'd usually find interesting but they've hooked me with the way they tell the story and the atmosphere. Definitely worth a look.

The new Hunter X Hunter series is solid but with 70+ eps in, it might seem too overwhelming for someone wanting to jump in. Yikes, 70+ eps. So me and my wife have been watching it week by week for 70+ weeks. It doesn't seem that long. The story arcs can be a bit long but they don't drag on and the show does a good job of making you want to see the next ep so you can probably watch several eps a day easy (assuming you don't have to go to work or do chose or other boring old people crap).

It's a lot of fun but not just for kids despite the look of certain characters. The show isn't afraid to kill off people. It's set in a world where I guess killing people isn't as big a deal as it is in our society. Most of the characters in the show, even the kids, are willing to kill. In fact, one of the main characters, the white haired kid named Killua, actually comes from a family of world renowned assassins but most people treat him like a normal kid (even though they know he's an assassin).

This show also has my favourite clown ever (see second pic below) and I'm not even a fan of clowns). He's a bit like the Joker if the Joker actually stood a chance against Batman in hand to hand combat. The cast of characters is really cool and there's a bunch of neat character designs. Feels like X-Men back when I was getting into comics. I'm asking questions like "Who are these guys?" and "What's their back story?" and "What are their powers?" That sort of thing. The powers they come up with for their characters are unique and it makes you want to see them get into a fight just to see what kinds of cool stuff they can do with their powers. This show is bad ass.

Gintama is super hilarious but they're nearing 300 eps. I've only actually seen less than 10 eps, what I've done is watch the recent eps that have a C at the end of the episode number. They're 'classic' episodes and are mostly standalones so you don't need to know anything although feel free to read the Wikipedia entry if you want some background info on who these characters are.

This series feels like a "what if Deadpool made an anime" series. Fouth wall breaking is in full effect. It's even funnier if you know about the manga/videogame/pop culture stuff they reference. This episode about smoking which heavily references a popular anime is probably my fave but most of those classis eps are a blast.

I saw the 3rd Evangelion movie, Evangelion 3.33, a few days ago. It didn't wow me overall like the first two although they had some scenes that really wow-ed me (one of which is reminiscent of the helicarrier lift off scene in Avengers). I don't think I can properly judge it until I see the 4th and final installment. It doesn't work as well on its own like the first two. Plus there are a lot of characters being jerks just to serve the story. But I do appreciate that they're taking a different direction with the movie and they're not just rehashing the series. Unless they totally screw up the 4th, I think this series of movies is well worth a watch.

I also recently saw 009-1. It's a 12 episode series about cybernetic female secret agents. Based on a manga from the late 60s by Shotaro Ishinomori. I'll say more about the series in the next Boob Toob episode but I will say that I don't remember the last time I found myself watching a show where there's lotsa boobage and yet my brain was being satisfied intellectually. Totally unexpected since I thought it was going to be just cheesecake. I liked it way more than I thought I would and I want to revisit this series at some point.

At the moment, it's all Attack on Titan, Hunter X Hunter, The Devil is a Part Timer, Flowers of Evil and Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet at our place week by week. We have a backlog of One Piece episodes to get through and we're waiting for the non filler Naruto episodes to start back up. There are a few anime movies that we still need to watch. Some Studio Ghibli movies (From Up On Poppy Hill, Tales from Earthsea, Arietty), the newest Fullmetal Alchemist movie (Sacred Star of Milos), One Piece Film Z & something by Madhouse called Death Billiards.

I actually saw this a while ago but I forgot to put it on the last Boob Toob Supplemental.

Rob Paulsen, Maurice LaMarche, Tara Strong, Jess Harnell, Billy West, John DiMaggio & Kevin Conroy deliver a masterclass on voice acting, reciting some key lines from Star Wars but as the various characters that they’re famous for.

Warning: 1 hr 20 mins long but oh so good :)

009 Re: Cyborg trailer

Trailer for the latest film adaptation of Shotaro Ishinomori’s Cyborg 009 manga series. So much crazy awesome action packed in 30 seconds. I wish I could be in Japan later this month to see this.

Stoker trailer

Trailer Park Chan-Wook’s new film (and first Hollywood feature). You may remember him from such films as Oldboy, Joint Security Area and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. I’ve mostly enjoyed his movies and I’m loving what the South Korean film peeps are dishing out so I’ll be checking this out.

It’s written by Wentworth Miller (the main dude from prison Break) and according to Cinematical, it was voted to the 2012 “Black List” of the 10 best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood (thanks Wikipedia).

A Good Day to Die Hard teaser

Die Hard in Russia! I hope it’s better than the last one. But it’s like Futurama, I’ll keep watching Die Hard movies even when they're bad.
